Vengeance & Hysteria
Theo had to fight a shudder at Macaria’s threat. He didn’t doubt that she would be willing to skin him, either.
Looking at them, all the black hair, eyeliner, and clothes made Melinoe seem the scarier sister, but in the end, she wasn’t a goddess of death. Threats didn’t come as naturally to her.
Still, instead of being terrified, as the adrenaline rushing through his system suggested he should be, he was thrilled. At least he had a chance to tell Lysandros in person that he was sorry. Whether the man forgave him or not, it was more than he’d been expecting.
They were silent for a moment after the door closed behind the sisters, both watching the door and waiting.
Lysandros sighed. “Both of you, Melinoe.”
There was a scuffing sound on the other side of the door, like someone kicking the ground.
After another moment, Lysandros sighed again, but this time he sounded more relieved than frustrated. “I apologize for the behavior of my sisters.”
“There’s no need,” Theo insisted, shaking his head and turning to face Lysandros directly. Their behavior had been more disrespectful to Lysandros than Theo. “I did something wrong, and they were angry about it. I understand.”
“Did you?” Lysandros’s voice was soft, as were his eyes, but Theo had the feeling that his answer was the most important thing he would ever say. If he did have a chance to make up with Lysandros, the wrong words would end it before it started.
“Yes.” He took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and let it out. “I lost my mother this year. She was sick for a long time. In pain. I”—his eyes prickled, and Lysandros went blurry, but he kept going—“I couldn’t do anything to help her. I managed to take away a little of her misery, but my magic isn’t that good at absorbing emotions.”
Lysandros grimaced, looking like he wanted to say something, but he kept quiet. All he did was take Theo’s hand in his and wait.
He cleared his throat and tried to strengthen his voice. “I’ve been alone a lot since she died. When Hermes handed me that book, and everything in it turned out to be true, I did think of finding her.”
He still felt guilty that he hadn’t thought about her enough when he’d had the chance. He had lost hours of sleep to regret in the week since he’d been ejected from the underworld. The reason he looked for the place at all was the notion of seeing his mother again. Then he’d seen a pretty face and promptly forgotten all about her.
Was he so fickle? He hadn’t thought so before falling in lust with Lysandros, but now he had no choice but to wonder.
He let his head fall. Whether it was because of his ulterior motives regarding his mother or because he’d proceeded to forget her, he had a hard time looking Lysandros in the eye.
“I would say falling for you wasn’t planned, but to tell you the truth, I didn’t plan anything.
