“We came back as soon as we made the connection,” Sunny explained as she huddled into the couch, a mug of tea held fiercely in both hands, as if it were the most valuable thing in the world. “Which, speaking of,” she turned to Baron and cocked her head to the side, “we told Story we would check back in with her before we came back. I really hope she’s not upset with me.”

“I can assure you she is not,” Baron insisted. “There’s no way she doesn’t understand, and I’ll wager she even has a good idea of what we learned. Oracles are weird like that.”

Sunny’s mouth tightened in a straight line. Dexter could feel her wanting to believe him, but knew she would carry that line of guilt until it was proven unnecessary. That’s just the way her heart worked. No matter how impressive she grew or how much power she held, she would always be the same female he fell in love with a year ago. The same one whose tie he had to regularly re-tie because she couldn’t figure out how to center the knot.

“Keeper of the Elements, huh?” Slade mused, bringing the subject back around to the important part. The unicorn had situated himself on the floor in front of where Sunny sat on the couch and leaned his head backward to look up at her like a puppy begging for attention. “I don’t know if any of us could have guessed that title would be, you know, such a literal one.”

She leaned forward slightly and pushed Slade’s hair off of his forehead. “In retrospect, it feels obvious. At least to me.” Her voice was dreamy and faraway, a precious combination of physical exhaustion and relief. “The Trinity said something just this morning that should have been my first hint. She said that the Spirits Above saw fit to give me five mates for a reason.” Though Sunny was speaking out loud, Dexter had a thought that she was mostly speaking to herself. The fact that everyone else got to hear her train of thought was simply a bonus. “Hell, even in that moment… I saw the Morrigan in my vision… She mentioned the elements. Fire, air, earth, water, and spirit.”

Dexter felt the eyes of the other males darting around the room, and the mental space where they all coexisted became a whirl of wonder. Each of them began to size each other up. If Baron was fire, what was everyone else? Or was this all a fluke? The thought that each of them might be hosting a power within them seemed just as strange as the sight of Baron and Sunny popping back into the dorm naked. Dexter had never felt particularly powerful. At least, not in the way that Sunny was powerful. He had his strengths, certainly, but this new concept seemed too wild to believe.

But then again, he was seeing it with his own eyes in Baron’s obvious evolution. There was no denying
