Mr. Darcy was taken aback by how comfortable and content he felt at Longbourn. The cozy, lighthearted atmosphere brought back memories of his youth when his parents were still alive and his only worry was finding the latest books to read. These recollections seemed to have a lingering effect on him, adding a thoughtful air to his demeanor. Although somewhat aloof, it did not detract from the pleasantness of his person nor the politeness with which he conducted himself. An underlying gentility in his character shone through his choice of words, belying the distant air that might have otherwise been mistaken for arrogance.

Elizabeth’s eyes sparkled with mischief as she turned to her sister Jane, whispering, “He is certainly quite handsome, is he not? But I sense there is something more beneath that aloof demeanor. I shall enjoy figuring out what that might be.”

Jane smiled gently, her gaze wandering back to the intriguing character that had captivated their attention. “Absolutely,” she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Mr. Darcy put down his teacup, meeting Elizabeth’s across the room. An unspoken understanding seemed to pass between them, with Darcy acknowledging her curiosity and Elizabeth offering a small nod of encouragement.

The conversation in the Longbourn parlor continued briefly before being interrupted by a knock at the door. Mr. Bennet gave the maid permission to enter, and she quickly curtsied before announcing, “Mr. Morris is here, sir.”

“Ask him to join us, please,” Mr. Bennet instructed as he rose to welcome his neighbor. Mr. Bennet nodded, a smile playing on his lips.

“Ah, good day, Mr. Morris. So good to see you again. Do come in.”

Mr. Morris, a middle-aged gentleman with a friendly demeanor entered the room. He bowed slightly to the gathered company. “Good day, Mr. Bennet. I hope I am not intruding.”

“Not at all, Mr. Morris,” Mr. Bennet replied warmly. “Allow me to introduce you to Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, our guest. Mr. Darcy is an acquaintance of my brother-in-law, Mr. Gardiner, here. Mr. Darcy might recommend Netherfield Park to a friend who is interested in becoming a potential tenant.”

Mr. Morris turned to Mr. Darcy, shaking his hand firmly. “A pleasure to meet you, Mr. Darcy. And Mr. Gardiner, it is always a delight to see you.”

“The pleasure is mine,” Darcy replied with a polite nod. Mr. Gardiner added, “Indeed, Mr. Morris, it is good to see you as well.”

After a few moments of small talk about the journey from London and the beauty of the Hertfordshire countryside, Mr. Morris turned his attention back to Darcy and Gardiner. “I was hoping to show you both Netherfield Park. Does that suit you, gentlemen?”

Mr. Darcy glanced at Mr. Gardiner, who nodded in agreement. “That would be splendid, Mr. Morris,” Darcy said. “I am quite eager to see the property.”

Mr. Bennet, always the gracious host, interjected. “Please, allow me to offer my carriage for your voyage. It would be no trouble at all.”

Mr. Morris smiled gratefully. “Thank you, Mr. Bennet. That is most generous.”

Mr. Bennet clapped his hands together. “Excellent! Then it is settled.
