Chapter Twenty-Seven

Colt

Watching her collapse to the floor like that almost broke me. The hell she must have gone through at the hands of those bastards terrified me. What had they done to her? There was blood on her face, and I swore that I would deal with Loki's Legion once and for all. I fired a quick text to Dee at the clubhouse and told her to send some guys down to the hotel to stand guard over Ellie's folks, and she fired one straight back assuring me that they were on their way.

I wrapped Ellie in my hooded jacket and scooped her up into my arms to carry her out the door without bothering to close it. There was no point, with the lock being busted. Carefully, watching every step, I carried her down the stairs to my waiting car, thankful that the bike was in pieces back at the clubhouse, and that I'd chosen that week to strip the engine, meaning I'd had no choice on what vehicle to bring.

Once she was secured in the passenger seat, I slammed the door and went around to the driver's side. After buckling my seatbelt, I turned to face her where she sat head down and shoulders shuddering as she sobbed.

“Hey. Are you okay? What did they… what did they do to you?” My voice cracked as I asked the one question I wasn't sure I wanted an answer to.

“Nothing. They hurt me physically a little, but you got there before any real damage was done.” She tilted her face toward me. “Thank you. Thank you so much.” Her lip trembled again, and I leaned forward to envelop her in my arms as best as I could in the confined space, pulling her head toward my chest as I stroked her hair.

“Shh… I'm so fucking sorry I didn't get there sooner, baby. I'm so sorry.” I spoke through clenched teeth as I fought the anger at myself and the sadness over what they had subjected her to that warred inside of me.

She pulled away and stared up at me. “Are you kidding me? You got here just at the right time you big oaf.” She smiled and my aching heart nearly fucking melted. She still had a sense of humor after all that she had been through.

A stupid grin spread across my face, and I shook my head. “You're quite something. You know that?”

She frowned. “Is that a compliment?”

“Hell yeah, it's a compliment. After what you've been through tonight… You remind me of…” Realizing what I was about to say out loud, I stopped myself and turned to face front.

Dumb-ass.

“I remind you of…?”

I sighed a long deep exhale and kept my eyes front. “Maria was being abused by her boyfriend when I met her. I actually watched him slap her in the restaurant she worked at. No regard for who was around. So damned arrogant that he didn't care who saw. I flipped. Although looking back, I was pretty restrained. I didn't kill the guy even though I wanted to.
