Chapter 7

Data Storage and Management in IoT

Massive data collection is one of the main characteristics of the Internet of Things (IoT). However, the true value of IoT is realized when this data is efficiently stored, managed and analyzed. This chapter explores the different storage technologies, data management strategies, and analysis tools that allow you to extract meaningful insights from the data collected by IoT devices.

Data Collection and Storage

Data generated by IoT devices can be stored in a variety of ways depending on specific application needs and infrastructure limitations. Here are some of the main approaches:

Local Storage :

Description : Data is stored locally on the device or on a nearby edge server.

Benefits : Reduces latency, increases security of sensitive data.

Disadvantages : Storage capacity limitations, management complexity.

Cloud Storage :

Description : Data is sent and stored on cloud servers.

Benefits : Scalability, ease of access and sharing of data, integration with advanced analysis tools.

Disadvantages : Higher latency, security and privacy concerns.

Hybrid Storage :

Description : Combination of local and cloud storage, where critical data is stored locally and less sensitive data is sent to the cloud.

Benefits : Balance between latency, security and scalability.

Disadvantages : Complexity of implementation and management.
