How are CMDBs managed?

In order to manage a CMDB, it must first be created. Depending on the size of the organisation, it can range from a simple, detailed spreadsheet, to using a third-party tool to document and update the various CIs and their relationships. An organisation can also have multiple CMDBs. The network management team can have a CMDB consisting only of LAN switches, routers and modems. The computer support team can have a CMDB consisting of servers, desktops and printers. So, when a change is being implemented, both the teams will have to put their heads together and ensure changes in one do not affect the other. The important thing is to have the CMDB always accurate and current. A vital, initial activity will be deciding which items are to be included in the CMDB. Only important, useful and concise information should be entered. If too many details are entered, the CMDB will soon become unmanageable and cumbersome to update.

Table 10 shows a very simple CMDB and its update after a service pack upgrade with a change of business owner.

Now the various teams can use the latest information for any of their requirements.
