Under The Hood Of A PDU

The answer to that question is a lot. I've taken the time to buying some of these Asian PDUs and then voiding the warranty by immediately opening them up to see what they look like on the inside. I know why these low-cost PDUs are priced so low – a lot of corners have been cut in the design and manufacturing of these units. However, most customers don't open their low-cost PDUs up so they have to find out the hard way.

My Scandinavian colleagues who had selected the low-cost Asian PDUs were excited to get the first batch. Once they arrived, they immediately took them into their lab for a complete check out. What they found disappointed them. The impact of selecting a low-cost PDU became apparent very quickly: the use of cheap fuses coupled with a poorly engineered design resulted in a PDU that provided unstable switching. Sometimes it switched, sometimes it did not.

Their second discovery also clearly showed the reason that they should not have selected a cheap PDU. Although the catalog had listed an impressive number of features for the PDU, testing revealed that some of the features were only partially implemented and others were missing all together.
