The muscles in table 6.1 are a generalization only. In all scoliotic postures there is a degree of rotation in vertebrae, and in many cases there is marked kyphosis. This will determine which muscles are shortened and which are lengthened, and you should assess these for yourself before treatment. For example, in figure 6.2 (b and c) the spine is convex on the right and left, respectively, but both have skin creases on the right, indicating shortening of the soft tissues in this region. As scoliotic postures involve rotation of vertebrae, length of the deep rotator muscles will be asymmetrical also. Imbalance between the upper and lower limbs is also common. Many therapists focus on the spine alone, but it is also important to address soft tissue shortening in other parts of the body.
