Chapter 13

Chaos

The shapeshifters and the news team leapt aside as Surt took a couple of steps toward the gateway. The top of the fiery opening reached just past his knees, and he bent to insert his sword at its highest point.

Brilliant light flickered and flashed. Energy crackled and hissed. A dazzling aura surrounded the sword as the fire giant tensed and straightened his back as if to lift a great weight. Then, roaring with the effort, and with muscles bulging, he wrenched the blade upward with mighty strength, tearing through the fabric of the universe and tripling the height of the gateway. Like a flesh wound, it gaped open.

Emily and several others clapped their hands over their ears to shut out the vicious sizzling and popping. Dewey threw himself down on the sand. Larry staggered backward, his camera somehow still pointed in the right direction.

Surt grunted and withdrew the sword, then reinserted it halfway down, this time angling the blade sideways. After a bit of savage sawing, the opening gaped wider still, with folds of reality peeling back and dripping liquid fire. Acrid smoke filled the air, and the strobing, crackling lightshow played across the dunes all around. Panting, he stepped back from the gateway, and the noise gradually died.

He’d not only extended the opening vertically but also doubled its width, and now Old Earth was clear to see beyond. The interior walls of the office seemed to float in midair above the sand. And because the gateway was so much taller now, it also revealed an office on the floor above. A thick concrete slab separated the two levels.

The fire giant’s sword had turned dull again. He lifted it, stared in disgust, then again pointed it toward the gateway. “Advance!” he commanded.

Leaning in, he began hacking at the slab of concrete blocking his way at waist height. For a second, Hal thought there was no chance of the giant’s sword causing any real damage, but he was wrong—the steel blade sliced easily through everything it touched, and in just a few powerful strokes, huge chunks of debris came crashing down.

A roar went up from the approaching army as Surt continued hacking a path. Smoke and dust billowed as he stepped fully into the office.

He’d crossed over. He was in Old Earth. He was actually standing inside the building, his feet planted on the thirteenth floor and his head scraping the ceiling of the fourteenth.

He waded deeper, slashing with his sword, and was quickly engulfed in a thick grey cloud.

Fire giants stepped in after him. One after the other, they vanished into the smoke. The noise coming from the room was incredible—thuds and bangs and crashes, the clang of steel blades, amplified booming roars . . . and it went on and on as dozens upon dozens of giants filed into the gateway.

Hal and his group stumbled across the sand away from the din, and away from occasional lumps of concrete that came flying out.

“What have we done?” Lauren cried.

“About the worst thing ever,” Abigail said.
