Kenâs monster costume floated face down in the pool when Marcie came out to paint late in the morning, having slept in, likely meaning Ken didnât win the contest, which meant heâd still be at Patâs, and Pat would be remaining at Timâs. Which worked out okay, because somebody had to feed Nubbles. Though had she not sent Patâand, hence, Patâs alcoholâover to Timâs, Tim would be there looking after his cat himself instead of in the hospital.
Marcie stared at her sketchbook. She was really beginning to hate drawing what other people wanted, but thatâs where the bread was buttered. The sooner she finished and got Dennisâs book over with, the sooner she could move on to what she wanted to paint, which was . . . what exactly, other than some interesting scenes she saw? What did she want to say with her art? She never thought art had to talk.
Marcie doodled a cat with a boy and his parents, all decked out in Western wear, all wearing happy smiles, at the Calgary Stampede. Next, the boy took the cat on the Ferris wheel, for which Marcie drew the catâs head sticking out of the boyâs shirt at the top of the ride, looking terrified. Convinced the kid wanted to kill him, Timâand Dennis could call him Tim now, for all she cared, because sheâd never be seeing the real Tim againâthen took off and hid in the bottom of a car on the toboggan rideâwhich no reader would see as a safe place of refuge, because every kid knew those taboggans went fast. On the next page, Marcie sketched a blur of passing taboggan cars, and on the page after that, Tim staggering off and throwing up. In an unreasonable attempt to make himself feel better, he consoled himself with corn dogs, candy floss, ice-cream bars, and mini doughnuts. Then, while still on a sugar high, he commandeered a bumper car and maniacally drove around slamming into everything.
At this point, Marcie started making notes, because the ideas were coming faster than she could draw. Tim could sit ringside at the rodeo and prowl the bull pens via the fence tops until a cowboy scooped him up out of harmâs way and gave him a cigarette. He could down a beer next, before hopping onto the back of a bucking bronc. Rodeo clowns would rescue him from his wild ride, from which Tim would then pass out on his back. After recovering, he could watch the grandstand show from onstage, because no one would notice a small cat hiding in the wings, looking up dancersâ skirts as they passed. Heâd decide to dance with them until he got accidentally kicked. To nurse his internal injuries, he could hide under a barrel, which would be right next to the fireworks, where heâd be when they all got lit off. A stray spark could ignite his fur, which would be the last straw that would drive Tim home. The kid
