Negativity, negativity, negativity. And the vast majority relating to topics I either had no interest in whatsoever or that I personally found offensive.

Because Michelle was highly reactive and openly admitted to wanting to not like me solely on principle, I felt like I had to walk on eggshells and tolerate a great deal more tedium and outright offensive speech than I would ordinarily. Otherwise, I was fairly certain that she would attempt to guilt Rob into breaking things off with me. I cared far too much for him to let this happen.

Even things with Seth had become remarkably strained, as he was finding that dealing with my spending most of my time and energy on other lovers was harder than he imagined it would when he’d been in a similar position. As a result, he was bitter and brooding, passive-aggressive and avoidant.

In the midst of all of this stress, it was good to have Justin as the one person I could talk to without a filter. It emboldened me, and despite the attendant stress, it seemed having multiple concurrent relationships was doing wonders for my confidence. I felt invincible, fearless.

With my newfound bravery, not too long after Rob and Michelle’s trip to Maine, I came out about my sexual orientation to my mother.

It started when we were talking about one of my friends from college. “You knew she was gay, right?” I said.

Mom said, “I think so. I barely remember her.”

“You know, Mom,” I continued. “I have A LOT of gay friends.”

“Seems it,” she said.

“I’d say more than half actually, especially if you count the bisexuals.”

She didn’t say anything.

“You know, people who can love either men or women?”

“I’ve heard of that,” she said.

“I think a lot of people are in the middle,” I said. “A lot of people are bisexual and just get passed off as straight. Because they’re married, and no one asks.” I paused. “Like me, for example.”

Silence.

“You okay, Mom?” I asked.

“I’m not really surprised,” she said. “I always kind of knew there was something going on with you.”

“I think it’s more that I care about body parts less than other people,” I continued. “Like, I’m more into the friendships and the personalities and stuff.”

She sighed. “You talk way too much about your friends, religion, and sex. I don’t care about that stuff. Let’s just stick to talking about dieting, cooking, and your marriage from now on.”

“Fair enough,” I replied.

No drama. No wild emotion.

Like that, I was out. A huge weight off my shoulders.
