Movement Therapy of Brunnstrom
This theory is particularly concerned with the rehabilitation of patients who have suffered a stroke (Brunnstrom, 1970, 1996; Burke, 2007; Houglum & Bertoti, 2012). It is based strongly on both the reflex and hierarchic models of motor control (see Pendleton & Schultz-Krohn, 2012).
Assumptions
Normal development involves the reorganization of spinal cord and brainstem Reflexes and reactions into purposeful movement; therefore, reflexes can assist the recovery of normal movement following stroke.
Sensory stimuli can elicit motion.
The recovery of movement progresses from synergies, which are movement patterns that involve the entire involved limb, to normal voluntary movements.
Learning through practice of the new voluntary movements, most effectively done through the incorporation of the movements into daily or purposeful activities, must be completed.
