Chapter 12 - Katya

Katya followed Niall out of the house. With every fiber of her being, she wanted to grab onto him, to beg him not to leave. But she knew she had to let him go, to let him have his space to process all the things she had told him. It had certainly been a shock for both Fiona and Niall.

Over the years, Fiona had asked her many, many times about her father. Every time, she had told Fiona that her father was a wonderful man who had loved Katya very, very much, but because of some things she couldn’t really tell her yet, she’d had to leave her father. She’d always avoided giving a straight answer as to why he was absent from Fiona’s life, not because she didn’t want to, but because she thought Fiona was too young to understand. Whenever she had asked her what her father’s name was, she had only told her it was ‘Niall’.

But of late, Fiona’s questions about her dad had started getting more and more insistent. Katya had known for a while now that it would only be a matter of time before matters came to a head. In a way, she was kind of relieved that she wasn’t keeping the secret anymore. The downside was that both father and daughter were mad at her. And their first meeting had been ugly. She wished she could go back in time and change it. Knowing Fiona, she knew she would be back once she had calmed down enough. But would Niall ever be back? He had promised he would be back, she told herself fiercely. She had to trust him.

It wasn’t how she had planned it at all. Whenever Fiona had a sleepover at one of her friends, she normally returned much later. But she hadn’t factored in Maisie’s mom’s bad cooking in her plan, she thought with a grimace. She had decided to tell Niall over breakfast. She knew he would be shocked and angry when she told him, but she had hoped that wanting to meet his daughter would make him stay.

She watched him from a gap in the woods as he transformed before her very eyes into a fire-breathing dragon. She had seen him shift many, many times in the past; it never failed to awe her.

A thin mist of dull silver surrounded him, obscuring him from her vision. She knew this was called the Metal Veil in the same way she knew that Niall was a platinum dragon. He had told her that he got his shifter powers from that particular metal. As she watched his body elongate, she remembered snatches of his conversation with Tristan the previous evening as they had been on their way to her place. There had been mentions of mountains enhancing their power, something about unlocking the power with their mates.

She wondered what that conversation meant in a bid to distract herself. Could it mean that Niall and his mates would become
