CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Fernando stood in front of his open trunk, a moving box in his arms, as he stared at the green Victorian house with a quizzical expression. “I won’t lie. I pictured it being bigger. More like a mansion.”

“I told you it was modest.” Sadie grabbed a box from the back seat and hefted it onto her hip.

“But her ex-husband is like one of the richest guys on the planet. It’s only a matter of time before he builds a rocket to blast off into space.”

“Hopefully never to return,” Sadie couldn’t help adding. She still hadn’t fully recovered from her one encounter with the man and had no desire to repeat it. “Julianna isn’t like him, though. She’s more down-to-earth.”

“I’m sure. As down-to-earth as someone can be when they hire full-time, live-in staff,” Fernando teased.

“She’s the head of a tech start-up, and guardianship of her niece basically just fell in her lap a few months ago. Can you blame her?” Sadie countered, feeling the need to defend her employer in a way that almost felt like she was defending herself, too. After all, she couldn’t even count the number of times she’d sworn she would never take a live-in position. Sure, she had during Covid, but she didn’t have a choice then because it was the only thing available, and she had to eat. Yet here she was, moving all her worldly possessions into Julianna’s guest room.

“I suppose not,” Fernando admitted, closing the trunk and following Sadie up the steps to the front door, his arms laden with as many boxes as he could carry. “As long as you promise this isn’t one of those lesbian U-Haul situations.”

“Oh my God, Fernando. I can’t believe you would even think something like that.” Sadie winced as she heard the shrillness of her tone, knowing this would be a dead giveaway that her best friend was a wee bit closer to the truth than she’d like to admit.

“Hold on a minute.” Fernando slanted his head. “Did something happen between you two? Is that why you’re moving in?”

“I’m moving in because it’s my job.” Sadie pressed the box against the doorframe as she unlocked it with a key, relieved that they’d finally gotten rid of the fancy code lock that only worked half the time.

“You’ve turned down many live-in situations. Like when that movie star you worked for when they were filming on location in Boston wanted you to move to Beverly Hills.”

“Who would want to live in California when you could be in beautiful Massachusetts?” Sadie set her box down next to the stairs, avoiding his gaze.

“Pretty much everyone I know. They have palm trees and perfect weather year-round. We have snow half the year.” Fernando followed her inside, setting the boxes down in the entryway and heading back out for another load. “Seriously, Peps. What’s going on between you and the boss lady?”

Fernando’s eyes bore into Sadie, searching for the truth she wasn’t quite ready to admit to herself let alone another living soul.
