Chapter Eight

Daniel didn’t really need Mandy along for the trip to the sporting goods store. She’d already said she didn’t know anything about the equipment Kaden would need for T-ball, but he thought Kaden would want her to be a part of the trip. But deep down Daniel knew the desire to have her along wasn’t entirely about Kaden. Ever since he’d held her in his arms and comforted her last night, he hadn’t stopped thinking about how good it’d felt to hold her…and how much he wanted to do that again.

“So was I good today at work?” Kaden asked from his booster seat.

Daniel grinned at him via the rearview mirror. “Yep, you were great.” It’d been a lot easier entertaining Kaden at the church than Daniel had anticipated thanks to the fenced-in playground by Daniel’s office window and the abundance of space for running throughout the class hallways. Kaden had played all day except for when he’d taken his afternoon nap, which had lasted a whopping three hours. Daniel had actually called Mandy after hour two to ask if that was normal. She’d merely laughed, said Kaden must have been exhausted and then assured Daniel that everything was okay.

Amazing how much he’d enjoyed hearing her laugh and chatting with her about the boy they were raising together. He liked the thought of that, raising Kaden with Mandy, and wouldn’t mind it being a permanent arrangement. But he couldn’t forget her final words in that email.

It isn’t fair, Daniel, that I am stuck here taking on all of the responsibility and you’re off on your safaris and whatever else you do. Did you ever think that I might need a little freedom, too? Do you have any idea how hard this is, raising Kaden by myself? Or do you even care? I gave up my dream for Kaden. I love him, but I had a dream, too. I did. I wanted to go everywhere. See everything. And it hurts to know you haven’t done a thing to help here and you’re still living your dream.
