On Memorizing

Memorizing is very individual. Somebody has a very easy way to memorize, somebody has a complicated way. For me it is very easy. When I play the piece a couple of times, I know it. My memorizing is only aural, I never see the printed page. However, when you are memorizing complex modern works, the harmonies are more complicated and anything but what you expected. Then you need much more concentration and sometimes truly memorizing the purpose of the work.

Reviving Repertoire

Reviving repertoire is sometimes much more difficult than learning a new piece. Many pieces are studied when you are very young, and when you are young there are problems, not that many, but the problems accumulate as you get older. There are more demands, but you have more experience. You have to get rid of the bad habits which are remembered from an earlier time. When you are younger you have a tendency to overdo things. Later on you try to find out the hidden things which you didn’t see before, and sometimes that is a very difficult and complicated process. Artur Schnabel used to say that “each composition is better than we can play it.” There is always something which we are not quite able to grasp, no matter what it is, and this is what we are trying to find. Not the notes, we know the notes, but something which is hidden.
