DARK
Killian had hidden us in the last stall of the west wing bathroom, darkness wrapped around us like a nasty, suffocating hug after the automatic lights had gone out. Our ass had gone numb hours ago sitting on the cold, tiled floor.
I usually didnât have a problem with the dark but the goddamn smell of lavender bleach and ammonia used to cover up the stench of lingering shit was making our eyes water. It didnât even help mask the scent, it just made it worse.
Rarely anyone even used these bathrooms anymore, since maintenance had moved us to the east wing. Now, these stalls sat here, rancid after the occasional employee suffered through an hourâlong poop, unable to discreetly slip back into their cubby without everyone knowing what had transpired, a completely different walk of shame.
I nudged Killian, but he didnât budge, still wrapped up inside himself, lost to the chaos that was our mind. He had subjected himself to hiding like this for years. Sure, there were the panic attacks, but the hiding in pure darkness, only allowing the silence to embrace us? The last time he had drawn this far into his head was right after his mother died and he hadnât emerged from his room for days.
I hoped we werenât staying here for days, not with the mixture of artificial flowers and shit scents surrounding us.
I tried to rouse him, but he was still hugging his knees to his chest, his head buried in his lap, rocking back and forth. Killian was basically catatonic at this point. There was nothing I could do but wait it out.
Phoenix or maybe it was Ryker had been able to pull us out of these things, but neither man was available, and to be frank, with the amount of stress Killian had gone through today, I wasnât sure I wanted either of them near him.
Sure, they were everything I wanted, but they seemed to break Killian. Worse still, some of theirâ¦darker sides terrified the fuck out of me. I had shielded Killian from most of it, holding back memories I knew would rip him apart.
He was under the impression that his men were dark and mysterious, which was entirely true. Other than the one scene he remembered behind the ski bar, there were so many worse things that Killian had seen and just hadnât processed.
His men were anything but innocent.
The Chef. The Surgeon. The Detective.
I realized that letting Killian see things I had repressed would be the end for us both, but he had to know. He was on the fence about seeing them again. He wasnât sure if he should leave them in the dust or run into their arms. Each one of them had given him a taste of what they had once had.
I never thought for a second that Killian would ever consider returning to them and now that he wasâ¦
While it was enticing, I had something that might make him leave it all behind.
Just once, I was hoping that Killian would listen to me.
