Homosexuality as a Passion

Fr. Stanley Harakas speaks of homosexuality as a passion:

In the language of the Church, this is a “passion.” It is a wrongful orientation of our desires. Passions are of many kinds, directed toward many objects, such a self (pride), money (greed), food (gluttony), extramarital sex partners (lust), others’ property (theft), etc. When such passions exist, no matter how strongly felt, the Church counsels agona, that is, spiritual and moral struggle against them. In our commonly shared struggle against sin in whatever form, the Orthodox Church sees all persons working to fight temptation and overcome the passions. Toward this end the Church offers a panoply of spiritual weapons to overcome temptation and to struggle victoriously against the passions. These spiritual weapons including prayer, worship, fasting, the Sacrament of Holy Confession, reading of Scripture and of patristic and spiritual writings, Christian fellowship, as well as pastoral and psychiatric counseling which should be used by all including those who suffer from homosexual tendencies.[21]
