Border with Peru
West side of Lake Titicaca The road goes from La Paz 91 km west to the former port of Guaqui (passports may be inspected at the military checkpoint here and at other spots along the road). The road crosses the border at Desaguadero, 22 km further west, and runs along the shore of the lake to Puno. Bolivian immigration is just before the bridge, open 0800-2030 (0700-1930 Peruvian time, one hour earlier than Bolivia). Get an exit stamp, walk 200 m across the bridge then get an entrance stamp on the other side. Peruvian visas should be arranged in La Paz. There are a few hotels and restaurants on both sides of the border; very basic in Bolivia, slightly better in Peru. Money changers on the Peruvian side give reasonable rates. Market days are Friday and Tuesday, otherwise the town is dead.
Via Copacabana From Copacabana a paved road leads 8 km south to the frontier at Kasani, then to Yunguyo, Peru. Do not photograph the border area. For bus services on this route, see here, and What to do, here. The border is open 0800-1930 Bolivian time (0700-1830 Peruvian time). International tourist buses stop at both sides of the border; if using local transport walk 300 m between the two posts. Do not be fooled into paying any unnecessary charges to police or immigration. Going to Peru, money can be changed at the Peruvian side of the border. Coming into Bolivia, the best rates are at Copacabana.
East side of Lake Titicaca From Huarina, a road heads northwest to Achacachi (Sunday market; fiesta 14 September). Here, one road goes north across a tremendous marsh to Warisata, then crosses the altiplano to Sorata (see below). At Achacachi, another road runs roughly parallel to the shore of Lake Titicaca, through Ancoraimes (Sunday market, the church hosts a community project making dolls and alpaca sweaters, also has dorms), Carabuco (with a colonial church), Escoma (which has an Aymara market every Sunday morning) to Puerto Acosta, 10 km from the Peruvian border. It is a pleasant, friendly town with a large plaza and several simple places to stay and eat. The area around Puerto Acosta is good walking country. From La Paz to Puerto Acosta the road is paved as far as Escoma, then good until Puerto Acosta (best in the dry season, approximately May to October). North of Puerto Acosta towards Peru the road deteriorates and should not be attempted except in the dry season. There is a smugglersâ market at the border on Wednesday and Saturday, the only days when transport is plentiful. There is a Peruvian customs post 2 km from the border and 2 km before Tilali, but Peruvian immigration is in Puno.
