10.3.4 Masculinity can be Good for Health

Some psychologists have taken a positive approach to examining potential strengths of masculinity in promoting health. Interviews and focus groups with 140 men in the UK aged 15–35 found they viewed their bodies as projects by which to express their identity, but without being too obsessive or vain about health and appearance (Gill et al., 2005). Two UK interview studies, of 30 men in total aged around 30, found that although men took care of their health, they played down the significance of their health behaviours and believed that discussing their health was unmasculine. They justified their healthy behaviours in terms of ‘action-orientation, sporting targets, appearance concerns and being autonomous’ (Sloan et al., 2010, p. 783). These attitudes might appear flippant, but ‘the masculinity-health behaviour relationship is complex, and more research is required to investigate further the ways in which masculinities are deployed in discussions of both healthy and unhealthy lifestyles … the masculinity=poor health behaviour relationship can be considered facile’ (Sloan et al., 2010, pp. 798–9).
