What will be your program goals?

In addition to addressing the varying needs of teachers new to your building, one of the most important factors in any successful mentoring program is clearly defining program goals. To begin the goal setting process, research the latest best practices in the field. Just as most curricular areas have standards, so do mentoring programs. Most states have their own set of mentoring standards. A simple search on the Internet will lead you to the various states’ standards. If your state does not have standards, you should seek out those from other states. This is a good place to start your research. It is also useful to reach out to other school districts that have successful mentoring programs and ask them for information.

Interviewing your newer teachers, those in their first three to five years in your district, is another strategy to help you understand beginning teachers’ needs. This information will assist you in guiding your program development. Ask them to think back to when they started in the district and identify what they wish they had known. Also ask them what they found most helpful during their first year. These insights will prove valuable in defining your program goals.

After completing your initial research phase, ask yourself three questions, which will assist you in finalizing program goals.
