Chapter 11
For the next few weeks, Caiden did his best to put Leander out of his thoughts. It wasnât easy, because not only had he trusted the shifter, but heâd thought they were becoming more than just casual lovers. After all, I told him I cared about him, and he said the same about me. And perhaps he did. I suppose Iâll never know. Nor do I want to. After what that bastard pulledâ¦You donât try to kill someone you honestly care about.
Zander, being a wise boss, sent Caiden off on jobs, one after another. Small ones, but they kept Caiden from becoming depressed. Not that he would haveâtoo much. Caiden was used to being alone and friendless, except for Zander and now Rian, and a very few of Zanderâs people who he had to do with on occasion.
Two days after his return from the first job, Rian called, asking Caiden to join him for supper. Warily, Caiden accepted.
Rianâs house looked the same, of course, bringing back memories of the time Caiden had spent there with Leander. It must have shown in his expression because Rian said, while handing Caiden a glass of wine, âHe is not worth your time, thinking of him. He betrayed both of us. You, perhaps, more than me. I will admit, I thought of him as the son I might have had, had I been so lucky.â He shook his head. âNow Iâm quite glad Iâve never managed to sire any children. They can break your heart.â
âLeander is good at that,â Caiden replied sourly. âAs long as youâve been around, you donât have children? Iâll admit, Iâm surprised.â
âI left that up to Zander. He had several, back in the day.â
âWhere are they now?â
âHere, there, everywhere. Youâll have to ask him. Heâs not much for keeping in touch with them or their progeny.â
âInteresting.â Caiden took a drink of wine before saying, âThere is Theirn, who Zander says is his many-greats grandson.â
âHe is. Youâve met him?â
âYes. He came to my rescue when I was stranded, after escaping Leanderâs death trap, so to speak.â
Rian looked quizzical, asking, âWhat do you think of him?â
âHeâs definitely not the friendly type. At least with me.â
âNot with anyone, from what Iâve seen.â
âWhy didâ¦? Never mind. Iâm sure you donât know.â
âWhy is he here and working for Zander?â Rian shrugged. âNot from any sort of nepotism. Theirn has certain skills that come in handy at times.â
âSuch as?â Caiden asked.
âThat I know of? Heâs a gifted mind speakerâeven with those who are not elvesâif he so desires and they can hear him. Heâs also skilled at casting a Glamour to make the viewer see him as someone other than who he is.â
Caiden cocked an eyebrow. âIs he going to be doing me out of a job?â
âI seriously doubt that. Itâs a spell, and will vanish as the caster becomes tired, since it takes energy to use it.â
âIt might come in handy at times, however,â Caiden said pensively.
âIndeed it does. For now, though, how about we drop the subject of work.
