Chapter Eleven

“Come with me today,” Dylan said, biting into a toasted bagel smothered in cream cheese and topped with fresh pineapple.

“I don’t know.” Mel chewed her lower lip. “I’d hoped to just relax, maybe by the pool, and forget about all the crap life has tossed at me lately.”

“I want you to see what I do.” He didn’t plead. Wouldn’t plead. Dylan tried to keep the tension out of his voice, but this was the whole reason he’d brought her here. So she wouldn’t be intimidated by his work. He needed her to recognize that she was as beautiful as any model he photographed. That she was the one he wanted to be with.

“Maybe in a day or two,” Mel said, not looking at him.

Dylan turned her face to him. “It needs to be today. We’re almost done.”

“I don’t see why—”

He played his ace. “Seems to me, I attended one or two of those work functions of yours. Hobnobbed and schmoozed those clients right alongside you.”

Mel sighed. “You did.”

“Then it’s time for you to return the favor.”

He almost laughed when she perked up. Sometimes, predictability worked in his favor.

“You’ve got clients you need to schmooze?”

He took another bite, trying to smother his grin. “Honestly? No.”

Her face fell.

“Should I be insulted by that look?”

Mel blushed the prettiest shade of pink. Not flaming red, just a rosy color that became her. “Sorry. I didn’t mean it as an insult. I’m just, well, to be honest, I’m intimidated by what you do.”

And who you do it with. He knew she thought it. He should let her stew in her guilt for a couple moments, but that wasn’t his style. “It’s okay. I know what you meant. And no clients. But I’d really like you to see what I do.”

While she chewed her bottom lip, Dylan took a deep breath. “It’s important to me,” he said.

Mel could balk with the best of them, but she also knew when hesitation would hurt. More than likely, her quick assent was because of that, rather than a desire to see what he did, but Dylan would take it.

He had a plan. She needed to see him as her forever guy, and this was another step in the process.

“Great,” Dylan said. “We need to leave in half an hour.”

****

Half an hour? Mel stared at herself in the mirror. In moments, she’d be heading to the location. She’d come face-to-face with whatever supermodel Dylan was currently shooting. In a bathing suit.

She tugged on the neon-yellow tank top she wore, letting more of her cleavage show. Not that there was much to begin with. She cupped her breasts, pushing them up. Dylan loved her breasts. At least he always said they were a perfect fit.

But guys were guys. And if you put supermodel next to Mel-model and let young guys choose, Mel-model would rank second every time.

“Ready?” Dylan popped his head into the bathroom. His eagerness showed in the very large grin that covered his face.

Mel resettled her top and added some final touches of makeup.
