Peewee’s First Snow

Peewee the puppy jumped excitedly on the end of Lizzie’s bed. Outside the windows, bright white snow had piled into drifts—the first snow of the season. Peewee couldn’t wait to go outside and play in it. If only Lizzie would wake up!

After a minute more, Lizzie, who had been in a very deep sleep, began to stir beneath her covers. Peewee took this opportunity to lick her face. After that, Lizzie was finally awake!

She blinked her eyes and sat up groggily. “What’s going on, Peewee? It’s Saturday, remember?” And then Lizzie saw the snow outside her window. Instantly, she forgot all her sleepiness!

“It snowed!” Lizzie cheered, scrambling off the mattress. Quickly, she got dressed, and Peewee ran after her as she darted to the kitchen to wolf down a quick breakfast.

“Take it easy, Lizzie!” Dad laughed, as Lizzie scooped overflowing bites of cereal into her mouth at warp-speed.

“Can’t slow down,” Lizzie panted. “Snow!” As soon as she’d finished eating, she rinsed her dishes in the sink and bundled up to go outdoors.

“Come on, Peewee!” Lizzie held the back door open wide, and her puppy darted ahead of her into the snow.

At the edge of the yard, Peewee stopped and stared. He’d seen snow on TV before, and he’d heard other animals talk about it. Once, he had made a big mess of flour on the kitchen floor and played in that. It had looked like snow—but yet, Peewee could tell that the real thing was much more wonderful!

“What are you waiting for, Peewee?” Lizzie called, jumping from the low back-porch steps into the white powdery drifts. She began to jump and run, stopping now and then to throw herself into the deep, cold blanket of snow.

Peewee took off after her. The snow was amazing, unlike anything the little puppy had ever experienced before! His stubby legs sank deep-down into it, so that he had to keep jumping if he wanted to get anywhere. It felt as if he were running around on a cloud, or playing inside a giant marshmallow cake!

Once, Peewee tried to taste the snow—and he was very disappointed. It didn’t taste sweet and fluffy, like he’d expected it to. It was more like the water that Lizzie poured into his water dish!

“Oh, well!” thought Peewee. That doesn’t make the snow any less fun!

He and Lizzie spent the rest of the morning outside. They chased each other through the snow. Peewee watched as Lizzie made snow angels. Then he tried it out himself…but somehow, his snow angels didn’t look as good! After that, Lizzie built a snowman and a snow dog that looked just like Peewee!

In fact, the snow dog looked so real to Peewee that he ran over to say hello—and ended up knocking the snow dog over with his enthusiasm! Lizzie didn’t mind, though. She just laughed and took Peewee to the top of the hill at her favorite park, where they went sledding together on Lizzie’s green toboggan.

By early afternoon, both the puppy
