5. How Do I Adjust My System?
Incrementally. Empathetically. Layer by layer. This process always begins with understanding the needs of your businessâand the needs of your customerâand assessing how well they are currently being met. Recognizing the patterns in these needs, you can intuit how well your system is meeting the goals of your business and determine where accountability, norms, and disclosure can be further enhanced to reinforce your systemâs integrity. Identifying the holes to be filled requires your empathy, your creativity, and your rationality: empathy to provide context for the problem; creativity to generate insights and solutions; and rationality to analyze and fit solutions to the context. For example, you might use empathy to identify that you need greater accountability in the timeliness of payments. Using creativity, you might generate solutions such as requiring a percentage-based prepayment for products, as well as a final payment, and/or having payments due within seven days of purchase, clearly highlighted on the customer invoice and including any interest that may be accrued on overdue payments. Then you will look at the context of your business and your relationship with your customers, to analyze which of these creative and empathetic solutions best fits your system, and begin to implement them. In the coming chapters weâll explore in detail ways you can implement accountability, norms, and disclosure in your business system, so youâll be able to skillfully identify the best tools to adjust and enhance your system.
