Chip's first lull in his work at Grayson's came around eight o'clock. His assistant, Isaiah Redding, went around the corner to Pete's Place for a burger. Chip sat down and began thinking about the anonymous notes. From the notes, it was a quick leap to think of Jon Hart. Chip realized suddenly that the talkative man had promised to be back this very day with a check.

Then, as if on cue, the door opened. Hart swaggered into the room. "Well, Hilton, here I am!"

Before Chip could rise to his feet, Hart had reached the desk, grasped his hand, and shook it vigorously.

"Bet you thought I was kidding," he said. He fished an envelope out of his pocket and slapped it on the desk. "Open it, Hilton!"

Chip started to rise. "I—"

"Never mind," Hart said. "I'll open it myself."

He opened the envelope and thrust a check into Chip's hand. "There!" he said dramatically.

Chip pushed the check back. "Wait—"

"Sure, you wait," Hart said quickly. "You wait two years. Until you graduate! But it's all yours. In your bank, in your mother's name."

Hart's flamboyant entry and sudden attack had thrown Chip completely off balance. Up to now, he hadn't been able to get in a word. "No!" Chip said firmly, standing up and dropping the check on the desk. "I wouldn't touch it."

"But I thought—"

"You thought wrong! I'm not interested!"

"Not interested in all that money?"

"No, sir!" Chip said decisively as he moved toward the door. "Right now I'm not interested in anything except graduating from State."

"But—"

"No buts, Mr. Hart," Chip said, stopping at the door. "You're wasting your time. Sorry." Chip hurried through the door and out the side entrance to Tenth Street, determined to escape the persistent man.
