The darkness before dawn felt charged and overwhelming within the contained corridor that led back to the entrance hall. Theodore walked the length of the Academy hallways in silence, his steps barely audible in the absolute stillness. Without Michael’s disruptive presence, his previous thoughts of the hunt and death swirled in Theodore’s mind and threatened to consume him.

‘We’re not done…’

“We’re done. That fucker led me around the ether like he lived there,” Theodore muttered. He stopped short when he pushed into the entrance hall and inhaled the lingering scent of animal blood.

‘I haven’t fed…’

Theodore grimaced. “You ate the first Briargrave, and sucked the lifeforce from the second. If you ate any more, you’d burst.” His eyes flickered to the portal mirror as he crossed the echoing floor. The portal was warded against any uninvited visitors, but after Theodore’s deadly hunt through the ether, it felt like a threat waiting to strike.

‘There is still death and life-giving blood to be had…’ his dragon insisted, his attention focused on the mirror and the realm it led to. ‘How sweet it will be to slice that pale throat and drink the fount of hot, tainted human blood…’

Theodore tuned the beast out. He knew Sever wasn’t going to calm, not fully until they both rested. The creature was sated in some ways, but failing to run down the final skinner had left it grumpy. He almost had the last Briargrave in the ether, at least, that was how it appeared. By the time Theodore had noticed his blood was flowing freely and found the good sense to leave the ether realm and check to see if Wylie was safe, he couldn’t even be sure Eli Briargrave was in there. For all he knew, he was chasing around the same shadow that had moved through the Redhem police station luring him into traps while the skinner had killed and set up the portal.

An adolescent. His prey was inexperienced, new to the hunt to the point he had stumbled into a simple trinity snare. If Theodore hadn’t been busy with the other two, he could had decapitated the fool in moments. Now, the skinner was free, looking to hunt Doe and the paranormal who protected him and destroyed his kin. Theodore’s jaw clenched as he gripped his wounded shoulder. Eli might also be in possession of enough of his blood to discern he was a dragon shifter…

“Should have killed him,” Theodore mused aloud as he opened the door that led from the entrance hall to the hospital. “Should have skinned him—peeled the flesh from his muscles like his family did that chameleon shifter—and then killed him.”

‘All skinners must die…’

Theodore’s mood didn’t lighten as he moved stiffly down the long corridor of the hospital wing and past the unused rooms that stored medical supplies for an emergency yet to occur. The office Rob kept for therapy sessions was ajar with no welcoming light. Theodore moved on until he arrived at the double glass doors that opened into the sterile hospital area.
