CHAPTER SEVEN

Theodore glared at the colorless security monitor and searched for anything out of place. Hours later, Wylie Doe had barely moved since placed alone in the new cell. It didn't make sense. Theodore had checked on him, quick moments between walking the station and setting traps. His greatest concern was Wylie's immediate safety, but he wasn't blind. Wylie had grown complacent to captivity without even the spark of a fight.

Theodore grimaced and glanced to the other monitors without truly seeing them. He had used too much power during the interview. Wylie got under his skin in a way he wasn't used to, and he lost his temper. Repeatedly. It drained Wylie of his energy and most of his emotional defenses. The teenager curled up with arms bound behind his back was completely vulnerable. If Wylie was left to defend himself as he was now, there would be no saving him.

“Stupid punk,” Theodore muttered, but he wasn't thinking of Wylie. It was his brother's face, long faded, that kept flashing in his mind. Alex, with his foul temper and impulsive nature.

Stupidity led to death. Caring led to death. Alex wasn’t there to counter about the importance of standing for something. No, the living had to move on and carry the hard lessons while the dead burned out, their blaze of glory snuffed and cold.

Theodore glared at Wylie's monitor, but the image didn’t change. The cage wasn’t safe. Nullifiers kept spells from being cast on the occupant, but also prevented shifting or any kind of magic for defense. The most obvious flaw was how the walls were too close together. It left no place to maneuver. A sword or long blade pushed through the narrow openings would be more than enough to slay Wylie in his human form.

A sorcerer wouldn’t care if he was alive when captured. A sorcerer would be happy to pull pieces of the kid out through the slats if it meant getting his hands on a dragon shifter. With Wylie hunched over, seeking a sleep that wouldn't come, he wouldn't notice someone behind him before it was too late.

“I’m never going to be anything more than a freak, and I’m so tired of fighting it.”

Theodore raked fingers through his hair. Damn, the kid might welcome a swift death after the way his spell left him.

The door to the surveillance room pushed open, and a uniformed officer stepped inside. His shoulders were so wide that he filled the doorway with his mass. “Master Howld, Diane Winchester has arrived. I’ve been asked to bring you to the conference room.”

Theodore pulled his gaze away from the monitors and turned it on the hulking officer. “Thank you, Officer Terzian.” The Redhem police had smartened up and called in one of their shifters to help for the day. Most paranormals had innate protections against the natural magics of others. With Theodore’s allure messing up all the officers, they had called in Dale Terzian, the only shifter officer in the entire police district. Fine enough, except he was as uneasy and distrustful around shifters as the humans were.
