“She’s the chief’s daughter,” Fiona said. “I’m sure they will listen to her.” But her voice didn’t sound so sure.

“We can’t kill this man. He didn’t come to hurt us!” Pocahontas said in a loud, brave voice.

Bringing Two

Worlds Together

For a long minute, the chief didn’t say anything. Slowly, he raised one hand. The warriors put down their spears and clubs.

“My daughter saved your life,” the chief said. “We will have peace.”

Fiona and Finley cheered. They ran up to Pocahontas and John Smith. John stood up, and Pocahontas pulled off his ropes.

“That was so exciting!” Fiona said.

John smiled. “I’m glad it’s over.”

“John is a good man,” Pocahontas said. “I’ll visit him many times and bring food for the hungry Englishmen.”

“Pocahontas is strong, smart, and curious,” John said. “She is a good friend.”

“And she saved your life,” Fiona added.

“I will never forget that,” John Smith said. He bowed to Pocahontas. “I must go!”

“What an exciting life you have,” Finley said. “And you’re still a kid, like us!”

Pocahontas shook her head. “There’s more. Sadly, the peace won’t last long. More Englishmen arrive. My father is afraid they’ll take our land. They keep fighting. When I’m seventeen, the English kidnap me.”

“What? After you helped them?” Fiona was so angry, she thought steam might come out of her ears.

“They tried to force my father to give them corn, tools, and guns. But the chief let them keep me.”

“That’s terrible,” Fiona said.

“It wasn’t so bad. The Englishmen were nice to me,” Pocahontas said. “I learned the English customs. I wore dresses. I even fell in love with an Englishman.”

“Really? I love a good love story!” Fiona said.

Finley rolled his eyes. “Oh, boy. I better turn my hearing aid down.”

“His name was John Rolfe.”

“Another John?” Fiona asked.

“There were a lot of Johns in those days! We married in Jamestown on April 5, 1614. The Indians and the English had a huge party! Together! We made peace. A peace that would last as long as my father lived.”
