Chapter Twenty-One

Lydia’s chest heaved with sharp breaths, and Elizabeth was suddenly nervous in her sister’s presence. “You saw George this morning, didn’t you? You cannot lie to me Lizzy! I know he was here!” Elizabeth pushed herself up to a sitting position, wincing as she put pressure on her injured hand.

“What are you asking, Lydia? Who is George?” Elizabeth looked at her youngest sister carefully, and suddenly, something flared to life within her mind, and her stomach twisted. “Do you mean Mr. Wickham? Why ever should he come here so early in the morning? And what business would you have with him?” Lydia straightened her back and thrust her shoulders back, staring at Elizabeth defiantly.

“I know he was here, Lizzy. You will tell me everything!” Elizabeth narrowed her eyes as she looked at her furious younger sister.

“I do not think so, Lydia. You are not yourself, and I will hear no more of it. Leave my room at once.” Lydia balled her hands into fists at her sides.

“I will not let you take this from me, Lizzy!” With a furious scream, Lydia leapt at her older sister, landing astride her body on the bed, and pinning her to the mattress beneath the coverlet. Elizabeth thrashed furiously trying to throw the smaller girl off the bed, but Lydia had the upper hand. Lydia’s face was a mask of anger as she shouted down at Elizabeth.

“Tell me, Lizzy! Tell me! What did he say!” Elizabeth gasped as Lydia’s knee pressed sharply into her stomach. Lydia grabbed Elizabeth’s injured hand with a steely grip that surprised Elizabeth with its strength. Lydia stared at the bandage intently as Elizabeth tried to pull her hand away, whimpering slightly. Her hand throbbed painfully, and Dr. Larkinson’s warning echoed in her ears. With a wicked grin, Lydia pinched Elizabeth’s wounded palm in her fingers, pressing firmly on the cut, digging the tips of her fingers viciously into the wound.

Elizabeth bit back a scream of pain just as Mrs. Bennet and Kitty burst into the room.

“Mama! I told you, she is mad!” Kitty’s shout sounded far away, but a moment later, Lydia’s weight was pulled off of her body, and Elizabeth gasped loudly, sucking in a deep breath of air into her burning lungs. Her hand was on fire, and Elizabeth clutched it to her chest. Mrs. Bennet was dragging Lydia along the floor by her elbow and Kitty was still screaming.

Jane appeared at the door and pulled Kitty into the hallway, and then came swiftly to Elizabeth’s side, helping her to sit up and inspect the damage Lydia had done to her injured hand. Elizabeth bit her lip as she looked at her shaking hand, the bandage soaked in bright blood once more. Her eyes flew to Lydia who was struggling against her mother’s grip like a wild animal. Her hair had come loose from its pins and her dark curls frothed around her face as she fought to get to her feet. Mrs. Bennet’s face was ashen as she grappled with her youngest child.
