Chapter Ten
Kate woke before Cole. She tried to stretch muscles that were, for some reason, sore. But something held her down. An arm. Coleâs arm.
She smiled, remembering. Theyâd barely stumbled from the shower to her bed. There had been no sleeping, again. Not until the wee hours of the morning. Kate knew she could curl up here for life, or at least, for hours on end. The alarm clock had other plans, though. If she didnât get up now, sheâd run the risk of being late for school.
Sidling out from under Coleâs arm, Kate slipped her robe on and went downstairs to make coffee. She opened up the fridge, wondering if she had the time and ingredients to make him breakfast. She had neither.
En route to the stairs, an envelope stuck in her doorâs mail slot caught her attention. Dread filled her like a dead body weighted with cement.
She ran to it, grabbed it, and pictures fell out. Pictures of her...and Cole. And a warning. Different than before but just as deadly.
Get rid of the boyfriend or youâll both die. You are mine, Pandora. And I donât share.
Pandora. Her professional name. At least she now knew. This was someone acquainted with her past. Who recognized her from before. Maybe even a john sheâd serviced.
Kateâs lips curled up in distaste. Sheâd only turned tricks long enough to cover her tuition. Sheâd never reported that last time. Instead, she had told the E.R. and police it had been a random mugging.
But it hadnât. And the leather mask worn by the man sheâd taken as her last trick meant she would never know who he was.
Noise overhead told her Cole was awake.
Kate shoved the envelope and pictures into her desk drawer, took long, deep breaths to calm her nerves, and headed upstairs to shower.

Cole woke to an empty bed, but heard the mind-settling noises of coffee being made. Kate was downstairs. He lay there for long moments, trying to make sense of this new reality heâd jumped into with both feet, and not a single cell of his brain.
Last night blew him away. Heâd never felt that level of connection, nor had he ever come quite that violently. He needed time to sort it all out. Space. Thatâs what he needed. Some time away from Kate.
The shower started, and his cock twitched. Heâd never look at showers the same, thatâs for sure. He slipped into his jeans and went downstairs for a cup of coffee.
Cup in hand, he watched out the front window while Kate finished her shower upstairs. The weather looked cold. He wondered if he should run out and grab his coat from the rig, let it warm up. Shirtless, he started for the door, until a slightly askew desk drawer got his attention.
He cocked his head, heard the shower still running. Feeling like he had time, Cole opened the drawer and pulled out the envelope that looked hastily shoved inside.
His blood curdled when he saw the contents. Pictures of them together, last night.
