Now what about singing? I have always loved singing ever since I was a kid! And again, I am sure that most children also like singing. So here is another CLAP opportunity! I remember a very famous Japanese childrenâs song called âSacchanâ. âSacchanâ is a popular cute nickname for âSachikoâ in Japanese. Just like âWillyâ is for âWilliamâ or âJennyâ for âJenniferâ. And since for Tetsu, itâs âTecchanâ, my parents would sing all the lyrics of âSacchanâ by replacing âSacchanâ with âTecchanâ. I loved it and just sang it all the time. And I knew many other songs in Japanese, too! But apparently when I couldnât get the lyrics right, I would get mad and cry. What a big baby I was⦠But I guess thatâs how serious I took it! So if your children also love singing as much as I did, then why not capitalize on that energy and get them to learn a few foreign songs.
Outdoor activities
Growing up, I remember loving outdoor group activities immensely. So I think here is another opportunity for parents to apply CLAP and let their children learn a new language simply by playing with other kids. Of course, the key is to find outdoor activities, such as camping or sports teams, where foreign children are also enrolled. But donât worry, there are plenty. For example, just Google âInternational Campsâ, and you will find tons of camps for locals and foreigners alike.
Other hobbies
As a kid, I was an absolute fanatic of remote controlled cars, which you had to build by yourself. I must have been about 9 or 10 years old when I got my first one in Japan, which was the Tamiya Boomerang[36]. I think it was about 40,000 yen in Japan (~US$600 in those days). Many would think that it was a pretty expensive toy for a kid my age, right? But thatâs not how my parentsâ logic worked. To them, the car did not represent âjust another expensive toyâ. Later I would build many more of these cars throughout my childhood and adolescence, some for myself, but more often for my friends. Also, I would modify my cars and equip them with the latest accessories. And whether it was to build a new car from scratch or add new parts to my cars, every time I had to read instruction manuals cover to cover in Japanese. Not having had any formal Japanese education, this was a tremendous hurdle for me. But when one is motivated, it is a real pleasure! Talk about eustress. And the resulting impact this would have on my Japanese learning was immeasurable. Do you think you can achieve this kind of results with 600 bucks in any other formal language-learning program? How many hours of instruction can you buy for your kids at a language school? And more importantly, will your kids ever be as interested in the teaching material as I was in what I was reading? So thatâs how my parentsâ logic worked. Now
