Chapter 30

Grover knew that Beaucharp and Fontaine had been working the case for almost fourteen hours. She asked to review their case notes and flipped through Beaucharp’s first. “These are outstanding. They’re complete and comprehensible, detective.”

“Thank you.”

Grover looked at Fontaine while still holding Beaucharp’s notes. “I’m going to assume that yours are as good. Make copies and leave them in Admin. Keep your own sets and log out. Go home and get some sleep.”

Fontaine said. “What about the report?”

“You have good case notes. Do the report tomorrow and—”

Beaucharp interrupted, “Captains Bird and Bargiel like our reports submitted daily.”

Grover stared at the floor, momentarily thinking, then said, “I’ll talk with the captains and get someone in Admin type up the report. Get some sleep. Something tells me tomorrow will be an early call and another long day.”

Beaucharp said, “Just so you know, Fontaine’s notes are usually written in crayon. For a long time, we were unsure about allowing her to handle any sharp utensils.”

Grover grinned. She turned to Stein. “I have to call the Tampa Bureau as soon as I leave here. Can I ask them to keep you on the case?”

“Of course.”

Looking at the detectives and then back to Agent Stein, she joked. “You have an unblemished record at the Bureau. So, you’re not afraid of getting corrupted hanging around these two?”

“No problem. I can whip them into shape.”

The detectives left Grover and Stein. Beaucharp stopped her partner in the hall and said, “Take off, Donna. I’ll make the copies and take a squad car home. You’ll get your notes back tomorrow morning.”

“You’re sure, partner?”

“I’m sure. Grover is right. Tomorrow is going to be another early one.”

Fontaine walked away, her footsteps echoing in the empty hallway. Beaucharp sauntered in the other direction toward the Admin and summed up the events of the day in her head.

We haven’t even been on the case for a full day and have already gathered a cast large enough for an Agatha Christa novel. The story comes with the antiquated Washbee, and his home with the unusual cat. What a setting! I’m almost afraid of what might show up tomorrow.

On her drive home Fontaine’s thoughts hurtled through her head. This Bunson Rosa evidence on Labbe’s clothes? Within Gaslight’s bag of oddities, an old leg, Rosa pieces chopped like someone was getting ready to toss them in a stew, discarded food, and the DNA of another woman. Another woman? We have a missing victim. How about the folks at the Bucket of Blood? She smiled. It’s like a freaking train wreck.

* * *

Fontaine hit Beaucharp’s number from her cell. It rang two times.

“What’s up, partner? Forget something.”

“Beauchy, we got another victim out there. We didn’t see this coming.”

“Yup. You’re right Donna. Something else we’re going to have to piece together tomorrow.”

“Beauchy, hold on. Guess who’s calling me now? It’s Stein.”

Fontaine switched to the incoming call. “Yo! Agent Stein. We got a mystery victim, don’t we?”

Stein said, “Yeah. Something to think about tomorrow. I just asked the Bureau to start a broader missing person’s search.
