Chapter Fifteen

“Easy James, just relax,” Montgomery coaxed me, gently laying me down.

He looked around, his eyes lost focus and I felt his power radiate outwards as he searched the area himself. Making sure no other denizens of hell lurked nearby. After a few moments, he regained focus and smiled at me.

“Just happened to be in the area, I suppose?” I asked, slowly getting back to my feet.

His smile faltered slightly, “Truth be told, we tracked the power here. Once I got close, I felt the presence of other demons, so I gathered some help and came out to lend a hand, looks like we were just in time.”

“I had them right where I wanted them,” I smiled.

“Yeah, I could tell.” He turned serious. “It’s not like them to come this close to hallowed ground, they must have wanted something important.” I noticed he glanced at the sword strapped to my back.

I brushed the desert sand off my clothes and started walking back to the church.

“What, killing me isn’t important enough for you?”

“That woman, the one covered in shadow. I haven’t felt power like that in a long time,” he said, ignoring me, then turned and studied me. “What did she want?” he added.

I was glad to have Montgomery here, he was a good person to have on your side, but I didn’t fully trust his showing up. “She didn’t really say much at all, just that she wanted me to help her save her daughter,” I kept my face forward, trying to hide the fact that I didn’t want to look him in the eye.

When I first was given the power of heaven Montgomery helped train me to use it, he knew me well and had a way of seeing through me if I was trying to hide something.

“Is that it?” he asked.

“Well, yeah, before she could say more those spider demons showed up and things got a little hectic.”

We reached the old weathered fence line that marked the church’s threshold. I easily stepped over, “When?” I asked.

“When what?” Caroline said, stepping closer to us.

“He said he felt Shadow Girl’s power before, when?” I nodded towards Montgomery.

We had come to the back entrance to the church. The fire now burned low, ashes covered the coals and no light glowed. The rest of the members of the Faith joined us, a few of them went around to the front, securing the grounds. The others stayed close, interested in what Montgomery had to say.

“Over the years I’ve encountered that power multiple times. It is the opposite of your power James, a mantle bestowed upon someone willing to fight for hell.”

“Wait, not only does hell have literally legions of demons it could throw at us,
