âYou see,â Fats grinned at Panzi, âshe likes you best.â
Panzi was shaking too hard to manage a smile. âDonât talk about it. Weâre even now, okay?â
Monk Hua waved his hand. âThis tunnel is weird. What did you guys see when you were down there?â
Fats replied, âI didnât bring a flashlight so I didnât see anything. But I touched some rocks; Iâd say this tunnel is man-made.â
All of us looked at the entrance with less terror and more interest, pointing our flashlights into it for a better look. It was deep, and we could see signs of chiseling on the edges of the opening, which confirmed Fatsâs theory. There was no trace of Panziâs admirer.
âLooks a little like a cellar opening in the north,â Fats remarked. âCould this be where the workmen kept their cabbages when they were building this place?â
Monk Hua ignored him. âThereâs a wind blowing out of this tunnel. The shaft goes through the mountainside to the outside world.â
Fats asked, âMaybe this is the back door that goes to the Palace in the Cloudsâlike the secret passage that you guys talked about? Letâs go down and have a lookâand if we run into that monster, weâll send it to hell for you, Panzi.â
âNo,â Monk Hua objected. âThis tunnel is more complicated than it seems. Iâm sure this was built as an escape route that the workmen made secretly, so they could save themselves when they were buried alive after they finished the tomb. I think this leads to nothing but the world outside. The good thing is, if my theory is correct, this tunnel will contain no traps. No one would place deadly hazards on an escape route.â
