St Paul’s Reflected, oil on canvas, 51cm × 41cm

No, you don’t have a migraine coming on. The fractured look to the dome in this painting is simply the refractive quality of the glass-paned reflection in the right-hand half of the painting. As should now be apparent, I often like to paint major buildings front-on, and a front-on view of St Paul’s from Watling Street to the east is only possible in this trick-of-the-eye way. But reflections are useful anyway for introducing symmetrical duplications, symmetry being something generally pleasing to the human eye. A classically minded architect such as Christopher Wren, designer of St Paul’s Cathedral, would certainly have argued the case for symmetry. The right-hand side of the painting, representing the reflection in the glass, has been made ever so slightly darker than the left-hand side.
