Unknown Artist, The Salop Infirmary, 1778, engraving.

The senior medical staff of the infirmary, Dr Robert Darwin MD FRS, Dr Thomas Du Gard MD (physicians extraordinary), Mr Edward Humphreys FRCS and Mr Samuel Sandford FRCS (surgeons extraordinary), occupied honorary positions, and were barely affected by the crisis. Responsibility for filling the vacant post of house surgeon fell on the chairman of the hospital board, John Cotes of Woodcote. Tom had several friends and acquaintances in the medical fraternity: Dr Robert Darwin had attended the Weaver children and the surgeon-apothecary, Mr William Clement, was his neighbour. So when Henry Burd (for whom Tom had painted a portrait of the head of a Newfoundland Dog), applied for the vacant post of house surgeon in the infirmary, Tom was not only happy to support him, but also well qualified to do so. Applicants were invited to publish their credentials in the Shrewsbury Chronicle, and Henry Burd’s read:

I am induced to offer myself a candidate for supplying the office of House Surgeon, and request your vote and interest at the ensuing election; when I hope to be able to produce satisfactory testimonials of my competence to fill the situation. Should I fortunately obtain your confidence, whatever professional experience I have acquired shall be diligently exerted; and I pledge myself by a faithful and conscientious discharge of every duty connected with the interest of the Institution, to merit the responsibility with which I shall be entrusted.
