THIRTY

MARLOWE

Denzel pulled the car to the curb in front of the biggest mall in New Oxford, and I barely held back my excitement. It was a weekday, so people were pouring through the front doors in smaller droves than usual. All the better for the amount of shopping we had to do. I hated waiting in line for fitting rooms. I got fidgety.

Clasping Thorn’s hand in mine, I ignored Denzel’s demands that we stay and wait for him to park the car and meet us.

As far as I was concerned, my mates didn’t exist today.

It was just Thorn and I, with a mildly annoying entourage.

Though I could agree having them as protection was for the best. I didn’t think we would be able to handle her being kidnapped again. Our pack would fall apart at the seams, our already strained pack bond cracking. Thorn wouldn’t want to stay with us for any amount of time if she was dealing with even more horrible trauma.

“Do you know what styles of clothing you want to try?” I asked.

Of course, I had a few ideas if she didn’t know.

From her hesitant expression and the gentle bite of her lip, I assumed she had no clue.

“We’re going to go to one of my favourite stores first,” I proclaimed. “I think they’ll have some clothes that will look great on you.”

“That’s perfect,” she said, giving me a relieved nod. “I’ve never really thought about it before.”

I wanted her to go into detail, but she didn’t. It was fair. I wasn’t exactly keen on going into detail on my childhood either.

It had been full of gleaming gold accents and paintings as expensive as they were ugly and antique furniture you couldn’t sit on, lest you cause a thousand dollars worth of damage. I’d left that life behind for a reason, and the familiar guilt flashed through me as I thought of who I’d screwed over in the process.

That was why this had to work. Thorn had to work. She was my pack’s scent match, and as we spent more time together it became more than just that. She fit with us perfectly and deserved the kind of happiness I hoped we would give her.

“I told you to wait,” Denzel growled, coming up far too close behind us.

Thorn’s expression hardened into a glare, her eyes focusing on the ground in front of us. We’d barely wandered into the mall. I’d taken it slow so he would have plenty of time to catch up.

“I remember telling you that you weren’t supposed to exist,” I said, dropping Thorn’s hand and turning to face Denzel.

My heart raced. Going up against him was intimidating and felt wrong. Not because an omega should never disagree with their alpha, but because I liked listening to him. I liked letting him take care of me and make decisions to better my life and safety. Possessiveness was my love language, as fucked up as that sounded.

However, it wasn’t lovable when he went too far.

“And I remember saying I would be keeping a close eye on you.
