ELECTION NIGHT WAS STRANGELY QUIET. When the dining room door was opened and the winning candidate announced, a ragged cheer went up from his supporters; but that was all. The victors didn’t crow, and there was no more backbiting. It almost seemed as if the election fever that had sown the germs of contention had at the same time scotched them. People looked almost equally shamefaced and purged.

It would be false to say that the welts of discord faded away within the hour. But within the week at most, the Grit’s milk pail would be on the Tory’s porch again and the meat grinder would again be shuttling back and forth. Within the fortnight, a Tory lady who had reason to doubt the manhood of her own Leghorn rooster would be dropping, as cosily as ever, into a Grit lady’s kitchen to borrow a setting of fertile eggs. And the rotten Grit who’d been soaking his hoop poles in the brook so they’d be limber enough to bend around a barrel would ask again with the same old ease for the lend of the rotten Tory’s draw-knife. No other knives were drawn until Election Day rolled around once more.

Even if the post office did change hands, there was little hard feeling. Everyone knew that where there’s a contest there has to be a trophy. They bowed to this with extraordinary good humor and grace.
