CHAPTER 15

“The fuck is he doing?” Cho muttered in Noah’s ear.

Hell if I know.

Noah could almost feel Callahan bristling, his glare so hot it was a wonder Danny and the table between them didn’t burst into flames. Noah understood. The man had a right to be angry at his operation being hijacked by a civilian with an extremely personal stake in the investigation. He gave Callahan a warning look anyway, sure they had to let this play out. The Danny he knew was methodical and grounded, not at all someone who’d go off script without reason. Particularly with Galen, a blood eater whose relationship with Danny had sounded stormy at best.

Noah did know that vampire’s expressive face though they’d never spoken before tonight. And it took no effort at all to track the change that came over Galen at Danny’s words and see the light in his eyes harden.

“Dan.” Galen’s tone was polite to the point of being cold. “If I had heard of such a creature, do you honestly think they’d still be alive?”

Danny’s gaze flicked to Callahan and then back. “Ah. No.” He swallowed. “But I know how you feel about humans trespassing into your world. How strict you are about the bloodex and keeping your donors healthy. And that’s why I’m asking you this. There’s truth in the wild stories you’ve heard. Someone is out there harvesting blood from donors, then leaving them behind like trash in the street, and it looks like every one of the bleeders was in this bar on the night that they died. We could use your help finding whoever is doing this, G.”

For several moments, no one at the table moved or spoke. The air between Danny and Galen changed, pulsing with a new energy that made Noah restless. Whatever had happened between them, it was obvious each still knew which buttons to push to provoke a reaction. And Galen’s slow smile only intensified Noah’s unease because watching another fanger ogle the human he wanted sucked, no pun intended.

Danny’s not yours.

Noah wanted to sneer. He knew that. Danny was a person, not a thing to be owned, and Noah wouldn’t allow anyone to even consider anything but. He liked the idea of wiping the grin from Galen’s face anyway and would do just that if he didn’t come up with something useful in the next sixty seconds.

“Who is we exactly?” Galen asked instead. “Because I doubt these friends of yours are baking bread at Nice Buns.”

“That’s not up to me to say.”

“Then I guess we’re done talking.”

Callahan pinned Galen with a searing look. “And I guess you won’t mind being arrested for criminal obstruction, Mr.—”

“Galen will do.” He laughed merrily. “You’re a cop, huh? That fits, what with the attitude and being so tense you’re about to implode. I’m not sure if I should be turned on or angry that you’re threatening me.”

Danny ran a hand down his face. “Galen, come on.”

“Oh, all right.” Galen rolled his eyes. “I assume this is all off the record?”

“Definitely.
