I spent the rest of the afternoon working on the Chevy until the shop closed. Just as I was heading back upstairs, Katie came out of Bonnie’s apartment and tossed me a dramatic wink and a thumbs up.

I knew Katie before Bonnie. She came by sometimes since she was Gus’s kid, but something told me I was going to have to learn to get along with my woman’s best friend, and deal with both of their laughter and talking, even though Bonnie’s was the only one I was interested in.

“Have a good night,” Katie said, voice high and squeaky, like she had a secret.

“You too.”

Bonnie stood in her doorway smiling and waving at Katie, who yelled, “Dad!”

“What’s my surprise?” Bonnie asked before I even got my lips on her.

“So impatient.”

“You made me wait months before finally asking me out, I’ve got a right to be impatient for a while.”

I shook my head at her, attempting to mask the smile on my lips, but it didn’t work. “Tomorrow’s Saturday.”

“Mhmm,” she nodded, head tilted up at me while she smiled.

“I rented us a ’67 Camaro for the day. We’re gonna go on a road trip.”

“Seriously?”

“Yup.”

She squealed happily and threw her arms around my neck. I caught her with an arm around her lower back, holding her close, and loving that it was me she got so excited for.
