Spanked For Stealing

With a sharp tug of my arm, I was spun around to face a stern-looking young man.

“Let go of me,” I snarled. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?”

“Unless you want this to get even more humiliating for you,” he said, firmly maintaining his grip on my wrist, “I suggest you shut up and come back with me.”

Aware of the stares and hushed conversations all around us, I complied begrudgingly. The young man led me to the back of the store, to a room behind the customer service counter, and shut the door. I maintained an indignant expression, trying to mask the panic and fear welling up inside me.

“Do you mind telling me what this is all about?” I said with feigned irritation.

“Oh, you’re gonna play dumb? Ok lady, have it your way. Empty out that big shoulder bag for me. I’ll bet it’s full of stuff that you have no idea about.”

His sarcasm was shaking what was left of my confidence, but I was determined to keep up the act. If he actually knew what I had in the bag, I’d be leaving this room in handcuffs.

“I most certainly will not. You have no right to demand that of me,” I huffed.

“Listen lady, I know what you’ve been up to. Dragging this out won’t make things go any easier. Now dump out the bag, and let’s count up how many dollars of merchandise you’ve slipped in there.”

My heart was thumping in my chest. I wracked my brain trying to think of something to say, anything that might get me out of this mess. After a moment of silent irritation, he grabbed my bag and dumped it out. My heart was in my throat as he looked over all of the items that had fallen out onto the table. Jewelry, smaller purses, even some fancy chocolates. Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized how far I had fallen.

“Well, you’ve got some interesting tastes,” he said, sorting through the pile. “I’m not sure any of it is worth going to jail for, though.”

Inwardly, I agreed with him. It was foolish to have stolen all of this stuff. I had just done it for the excitement. I didn’t really need any of the things or care about them. But right now I just had to get out of this trouble.

“Listen,” I said calmly, “I’m very sorry about all of this. I’ll be willing to pay for everything that’s in here. Please ask the manager if he would allow me to do that and we can just make this whole thing go away. You’ll have no more trouble from me.”

The security guard rolled his eyes but agreed to go talk to the manager. I sat in the room alone for a few minutes waiting for them to return. I wanted to kick myself for having done something so stupid. How could I have let this whole shoplifting thing get so out of control? The door finally opened and the security guard stepped back in, accompanied by a man I presumed was the manager.
