Agile technology as a competitive advantage

In order to gain a competitive advantage, you really need to nail the “agile” in agile technology. It’s worth digging into what I mean by the word “agile”. It’s a well-known adjective that is used to describe an ability to move quickly and easily. For an Outpacer, movement is key: you never stand still because the market, and crucially your customers, are constantly moving and changing. Your ability to move in the digital economy is going to be dependent on your technology, and that will determine whether you are an Outpacer.

But agility is also a methodology that goes beyond technology. The agile way of working is a way for organizations to react to change.1 It changes the way an entire organization operates, transforming hierarchical departments into small self-steering teams consisting of members with different backgrounds – for example, from marketing, sales, customer experience, admin, data and tech. It helps organizations to get a better understanding of changing customer needs, to quickly and continuously improve customer interaction and to implement smarter and, in most cases, more efficient ways of working. While increasing transparency, it breaks down internal silos and often creates a happier company culture, leading to increased employee satisfaction.

So when I talk about “Agile Technology” I’m really using the term agile blending both definitions, because to be an Outpacer you need to embed the principles of agile within your organization while adopting and deploying the right technology that will allow you to change quickly and easily. The goal is not to become more agile than you were before, but to become more agile than everyone (and at the very least your competition). And that means being honest with yourself about the technology you have available to your devoted talent. If it is not delivering a real competitive advantage for them, it needs to be changed.
