CHAPTER 11

Jules

“Hey, pet, have you eaten?” Kitt asks the moment I answer the phone.

“Hello to you, too,” I tease, trying not to smile too hard at his use of the nickname we agreed to after my first personal training session with Gideon left the swimmer lightheaded and giddy, Kitt sticky with his own cum, and me frustrated but walking on air.

He was so cute, apologizing for using honorifics with me without discussing it first and asking if there were any I’d prefer while Gideon was cleaning up before the post-workout dinner Kitt insisted on teaching us how to cook together. Seeing our extroverted, unflappable ballplayer nervous tugged at my heart in ways I really shouldn’t have let it, and the fact that his nerves came from confessing how much he’d love to call me pet even when Gideon’s dick wasn’t down my throat only made it that much more endearing.

“Good afternoon, Julissa,” he says, being as sarcastically formal as possible in response. “Now, pet. Have you eaten? Or do I need to drive over there to get an answer?”

I glance from my empty fridge to the listing for the attic studio apartment sitting on top of my pathetically short stack of remaining leads. Despite my growling stomach, it’s already going to be a battle to make it across the city in time to see the apartment today, and to say that I’m running out of time before my lease is up in less than two weeks would be a massive understatement considering I haven’t found anything with even remote potential.

“Still there, Jules? I was joking about tracking you down for an answer, but—”

“Sorry, I was thinking about something else.”

“Glad to know I’m so entertaining,” he says dryly.

“You know you are. I just have a lot on my mind. I’m kind of in a hurry, but I’ll pick something up while I’m out.”

“Let’s meet up then. I haven’t eaten either.”

“Can I call you later? Don’t wait for me to eat; I wasn’t exaggerating when I said I’m in a hurry.”

I grab my keys and some pepper spray just in case, wondering if I should tell someone where I’m going before I show up at a stranger’s attic in a part of town I wouldn’t usually go to this close to nightfall.

“Where are you going?” Kitt’s voice echoes between the phone and reality when I open the door to see him walking down the hallway toward me. “I’ll drive, and we can grab something together.”

As badly as I need the company, the last thing I want Kitt to see is how desperate I’ve become in my search. Not that I think he’d judge me. I have a sneaking suspicion he’d be far kinder to me than I’ve been to myself through all of this. But I don’t want anyone’s pity, and I don’t want it to hurt his feelings that I’ve turned down his very generous housing offer for his mess.

“Nowhere fun, really. If you’re lonely, call up Gideon. He doesn’t live
