Krista

Krista wanted to tear her hair out and scream.

When she went back to check on Nelson, the plate of food—she hated referring to it as that—went untouched just like the sandwiches and the dino nuggets she’d served him before.

“Nelson, why are you refusing to eat? Why won’t you…”

She was so upset that she couldn’t finish her sentence. She put her hands together as if in prayer and raised them to her mouth.

You’ll have to do whatever’s necessary to keep Nelson safe.

She knew that. She knew it all too well, but she couldn’t figure out what she was supposed to do. She wished so badly that Eric was home with her. He would know what to do for sure.

But he wasn’t home. He was out there where the danger was, probably dead like Joe and Stubby, with someone feasting on his organs right now.

Whoa.

The cruel thoughts surprised Krista. It was as if someone else had thought them up.

The monster with the red eyes taking you over.

She was just tired, that was all. And Nelson refused to eat. Of course she’d be losing her cool. Krista shut the closet door and paced the guest room back and forth, considering what to do next.

She replayed the image of Athletic eating Stubby. She stopped pacing at something she hadn’t realized sooner.

“Joe’s meat has gone bad. That’s why he won’t eat. That’s it. That must be it!” Krista’s lips cracked a hopeful smile. “He needs fresh meat. Fresh meat. I need to get him fresh meat. Fresh meat. Fresh meat.”

She kept chanting “fresh meat” out of fear of forgetting such an important thing.

Fresh meat. But where would she—

Of course. It was clear where she would get it. It was right outside her house, not even a couple of hours old. Meat couldn’t go bad that fast.

Krista ran into the garage, picked up the bloodstained knife, then rushed to the foyer and looked through the peephole. She could see Stubby from here, splayed on the ground with his guts spooling out. Athletic was nowhere in sight.

He was the one Krista was afraid of. She hoped he wasn’t around still. Even if he was, Krista had no choice but to go outside. She was doing this for her son.

She twisted the lock of the door. The sound of the click felt as though it was marking something monumental. Krista cracked open the door and peeked outside. The fresh, cool air that caressed her face momentarily took her focus off the task, and all she could do was enjoy the sensation.

Then, she quickly snapped out of her serenity and further poked her head out. Nobody in sight except Stubby.

Krista opened the door wider and tiptoed outside. She left the door open for a quick escape back to the house in case it was necessary. Her fingers firmly clutched the knife, poised to slice up Stubby.

She looked left and right down the street. There was a crashed car in the distance, a few bodies, but they were too far away for her to discern any meaningful details.
