Chapter 15

Gucci

I wake up in my childhood bedroom, a little confused at where I am, before I remember. I didn’t have the heart to call Johnny out on the other parts of what his dad said, but I’m fuming.

He had kissed me goodnight at my bedroom door and walked down the hall, shoulders slumped in defeat.

Then, I called my mom for a ride and got the fuck out of there.

Avoidance is my primary solution for dealing with painful realities, like Johnny having a date with another girl, and him leaving me all summer. Good times. I’m at a loss as to why he even started dating me if he knew he’d be gone so long.

Maybe two months isn’t that long though. It’s not like I would have been seeing anyone else. But, even if I can get over that, who the shit is Kat Lin, and why is she going to a cottage with him? And when? And again, fucking why?

I rub my eyes and check my phone. I have one message from Johnny already that says, “Good morning, handsome”.

I don’t feel much like writing back. I fight the good feeling those words give me. I don’t want to be wooed right now. I want to retreat, so he can’t hurt me. I know how to block off my heart. Blake has made me an expert at that.

I check my emails. My heart races at the sight of a reply for the film internship. Thank god, I need something to do this summer, so I don’t sit around pining for Johnny. Here goes nothing. I click the email and read the words, “We regret to inform you…”

Well, shit. There’s my summer plans, swirling down the drain. I should have worked harder for a back-up plan. Now I can spend the day kicking myself over that, too.

For once, I don’t want the semester to be over. It means no internship, no Johnny, and I doubt Luca is going to stick around after graduation. I still hate that I haven’t seen him much since he started dating Chase.

I open my messages and tap one out.
