Bear With Me

Landon Dixon

Roderick Justus trooped into the log structure that served as the RCMP command post in Dawson City, snapped his right hand up to the stiffened flat brim of his felt campaign hat and bellowed, “Constable Roderick Justus, sir! Reporting for duty!”

Corporal Neilson glanced up from the piece of paper he’d been studying, looked at the clean-shaven, prim and proper officer in his scarlet serge tunic, midnight blue breeches with yellow stripes down the sides, gleaming Sam Browne leather belt, and shiny oxblood riding boots. “At ease,” he commented dryly. “This isn’t the parade ground back in Regina. It’s the Yukon Territory.”

“Class of ’22! Yes, sir!” Justus shouted, proud of his recent graduation from the training academy in Saskatchewan. He snapped his arm back down to his side, then clasped his brown-gloved hands behind his back and planted his feet wider apart.

“We wouldn’t have called you up from Edmonton, constable,” Neilson stated, “if we weren’t desperately shorthanded at the moment.”

The blond-haired rookie blinked his big blue eyes. His button nose twitched.

“It’s a rough life up here, Justus, and we normally only take men with some experience under their belts. We cover a territory almost as vast and rugged as Alaska, with only a twenty-man detachment.” Neilson twirled the ends of his dark mustache. “But most of the miners, trappers, and mountain men are in town for the winter now, or camped out along the Yukon and Klondike Rivers on the outskirts, and we’ve got our hands full.” The corporal handed the sheet of paper he’d been examining to the constable. “This man is Ferdinand ‘Fer’ Peltier.”

Justus looked at the headshot of the clean-shaven, bald-headed man, noted the typed statistics of the man’s immense height and weight with a cocked blond eyebrow.

“He’s a prospector and trapper, used to be partnered with a local gambler and all-around ne’er-do-well, Earnest Rigby. Rigby was found in Paradise Alley behind the Gold Dust Saloon two days ago, knocked out and now in a coma. Peltier was seen leaving the scene on the night in question. The two men had had a public falling out six months previously. Your job is to find Fer Peltier and bring him back to Dawson to face justice.”

The constable shifted uneasily. “Um, did the witness say what direction Peltier was headed in?”

“Yes. North.”

Corporal Neilson looked back down at the papers on his rough-hewn pine desk. “A local guide, Thomas Cook, is standing by with a couple of dog teams out back. Good luck, Justus.”

Constable Justus snapped his boots together and squared up, whipped his right arm up in a parting salute, then wheeled about and marched out of the command post—the perfect picture of the newly-minted Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer. And the rawest of recruits and naivest of men to the ways and wiles of the brutally harsh land of the Yukon Territory.

The sun was a wan yellow disk hanging low in the bright blue sky, it being early January. The air was so cold and crisp
