THE PURITY OF GOD’ S WRATH
The wrath of God is not like human wrath. Most often when we get angry, we are offended and our pride gets in the way. That is a reflection of the evil heart of man. Even when we are angry about the right things, our own sinfulness usually pollutes our anger. That’s why we must not impose our concept of anger onto God. God’s anger is pure and untainted by sin.
God’s wrath is pure because it is related to His holiness, which demands that He not tolerate sin. Christ’s cleansing of the temple was a demonstration of His holy wrath (John 2:13-16). That dramatic scene was His first public act in Jerusalem. He made a whip, drove out the people and animals, and overturned the tables because God’s name was being dishonored.
God’s wrath is also pure because it is related to His justice. Remember what happened to Achan? God told the people of Israel not to steal anything from Jericho, but Achan disobeyed and hid some stolen goods under his tent. Joshua, finding that Achan was guilty, said to him, “My son, I implore you, give glory to the LORD, the God of Israel, and give praise to Him; and tell me now what you have done. Do not hide it from me” (Josh. 7:19).
Why did Joshua say that? Was he going to let Achan off the hook if he confessed? No. He was saying, “Before you get your due judgment from God, confess your sin and admit your guilt. Confess that God’s reaction to your sin is just.” What was God’s judgment? Achan and his family, who must have participated in the act in some way, were put to death.
God never makes a mistake in exercising His wrath. He doesn’t fly off the handle in momentary fury. When He is angry, it is the right expression of His holiness and justice.
