Edyra lay on the floor, hugging her knees, until the autumn sun sank below the hills and the chill air of nightfall crept beneath the heavy wooden door to make her shudder until she could bear it no longer.

Her cheeks were stiff with the remnants of her tears, but she could not seem to stop crying.

Everything she had hoped for was gone.

Every happiness she had hoped for as the wife of Urim had disappeared in an instant.

Manus had seemed proud of himself; proud of her misery and the revenge he had taken on his rival.

But what hurt most of all was that Edyra had finally realized that, in her father’s eyes, she was replaceable. They had not even tried to find her before Medober’s mage had said the words and bound her sister to the powerful and terrifying orc warrior who should have been her husband.

And now—

She did not even know how long she had been gone, or how old the information was that Manus had so proudly passed along.

It was no wonder that they believed she was dead.

Would her father have even mourned her? Manus did not seem to think so.

Tears flooded her eyes again at the thought of being married to a brute who delighted in hurting her.

She couldn’t.

She wouldn’t.

She would die first.

Edyra sat up painfully and rubbed her hands over her dirty face.

Nothing had changed in the hut. Birds rustled in the thatched roof above her head, and the dying fire crackled softly. It was dark in the hut, and she blinked her eyes hard to force them to adjust. She needed to re-light the fire, and find the stub of a candle that Durz had brought her…

She took a shuddering breath and rubbed at the dirt on her dress and legs.

Everything had changed, and she was adrift on an unfamiliar sea.

The latch scraped against the wooden door and an icy breeze gusted through the hut, but Edyra barely looked up.

A bucket of water was set down. It splashed onto the packed dirt floor and spattered her bare feet. She looked up into Durz’s shadowed face, but he was looking at the cauldron of stew, not at her.

“The fire’s out,” he muttered.

Edyra wanted to shout at him, to hit him—anything to make him go away. But she couldn’t bring herself to do it. She felt empty, and so alone.

Durz banked the fire, and she could see his brief smile as the glowing coals flared to life and the flames licked at the dry wood.

She also saw the gleam of the dagger in his belt.

“Are you all right?” he asked. His back was still turned to her, and she had already made her decision. She might be too weak to escape on her own…

Edyra pushed herself to her feet and lunged toward him. Durz heard her move, and he turned just as her fingers closed over the hilt of his knife. As confusion spread across his face, she pulled the knife from its sheath and gripped it tightly.

“What—” Durz stood up slowly.
