The wedding was beautiful, and it lasted much longer than I wanted it to. All they had to do was say their vows and be finished, but no. they had to be extravagant. They had to have singers and recite their own vows. Then we had to take a million pictures. By the time it was over, I was ready for a drink. I look for Ops, and I see him leaning against the bar.

I walk toward him, and he sees me coming. He turns to the bartender and says something to him. When I arrive, he hands me what looks like a rum.

“You look thirsty,” he says, taking a sip of his drink.

I issue him a wide smile, “Oh, very much so.”

“So, are you going to introduce me?” Puma states from behind me. I turn and look at her, rolling my eyes playfully.

I pull her in front of me, “Ops, this is my friend, Puma. Puma, this is Ops.”

He offers her his hand. “Nice to meet you, Puma.”

With her most polite voice, she says, “Likewise. Do you mind if I steal Mabel for a few minutes?”

“Not at all. I’m going to step over here and check my phone.” He points to a shaded area.

“Okay. I’ll see you in a few,” I tell him before he walks off.

Puma asks the bartender for a glass of wine. “Damn, girl. He’s hot, and he seems nice,” Puma says in a hushed voice over the top of her wine glass as if someone is going to overhear her talking.

“I know, and he’s super sweet. Ops is like a teddy bear.” Talking about him makes me realize how much I really like him. It scares me a little bit because I haven’t been in a relationship where I liked a guy like this, but it doesn’t outweigh my wanting to be with him. I’m ready to take this risk if it means I can keep feeling like this.

Puma sighs and tilts her head slightly. Her eyes are a little glassy, and if I didn’t know any better, I’d think she’s about to cry, “I’m really happy that you are giving him a chance.”

“Me too.”

Her eyebrows cinch in for a second before she looks back at me, “How do you think your father will react when he finds out?”

The giddy light feeling I had thinking about Ops vanishes, and I swirl my drink around in my cup, “I don’t know, and I don’t care. My father hasn’t been a part of my life over the past couple of years, and I don’t see that changing. He really doesn’t have a say in who I’m dating.”

Puma pushes a quick breath out of her nose and raises both her brows, “I hope so for your sake.”

“Yeah, me too.” I look out over the guests, trying to find any reason to change the subject, “So, did your date show?”

Puma’s eyes quickly dart to the crowd, and a blush crawls up her perfectly made-up face. “He did. I’m going to sneak off with him since our duties are over.
